Barcos Church

Barcos is a very old but small town. Who looks by far and by high, for example out of the small place of Calvário, can see that the town was at first formed around the church. The Mother Church, whose foundation dates back probably to the 14th century, presents in some of the façades numerous Romanesque iconography, with monstrous figures.

 Under the cornice, there is an expressive pack of dogs. In the town, we are immediately caught by old Manor House, property of the noble family Condes de Marialva.

The Casa da Colegiada (17th - 18th centuries) is another important building in the village, whose squared stones are well cut and whose spaces are very wide leading to a staircase with a stone shelter.

 Unfortunately, both wait for an appropriate repair and use. In the Colegiada Square stands the Centenários market cross.

The old and small Town Hall house with its handy bell, as well as the Casa da Roda dos Expostos building deserve to be pointed out.

An old footpath skirts around the town. It was once a Via Sacra path, which has been announced by the niches that, in the Lent time, had painted panels;

and by the market cross that leads to the Calvary, where three stone crosses stand out. In front stands Santa Bárbara Chapel, in whose outward pulpit the dramatic Sermão do Senhor (God's Burial Sermon) took place, on the Holy Friday.

Inside the chapel lies the half-uncorrupted body of Servinha, the merciful designation given by the people to a woman of the village that one day started to gain fame as saint.

This chapel, one of most important monuments of the Concelho of Tabuaço, played an important role as Mother Church until the moment the Barcos Church was constructed.

 The Cross of Sardão is a little market cross that according to an old tradition once divided the land between Moors and Christians. The Pre-Christian daily cult of these populations, wisely used, gave birth to a deep devotion to Saint Maria of Sabroso that every year is celebrated in her Chapel on the 15 of August.
