This small village is situated in high and flat land and it is thought to have pre-roman origins. Wealthy in pre-historical and medieval traces, here we can find several settlements, such as the Cabeço de S. João, Quinta dos Pinheiros or Castelos de Cabriz. The village had a roman road, which although having partially disappeared, it still shows some traces in Vale de Vila.

 At this place, there is a roman olive press and a medieval necropolis. Besides the above-mentioned necropolis we can find other things as well, for example in the following places: Monte dos Baganhos, in the church of our Mother of Sendim, Cabeço do Poio, or in the Quinta de S. Martinho. In Fontelo, in the Quinta de S. Martinho, in Arames and in Lampaz, there exist several caves hollowed out in rocks. 


 

In Cabriz, on the left bank of the Távora River, appears the Three Castles of Cabriz, which are granite fortresses almost unreachable, where according to the legend D Rausendo and D. Tedon retired with their men to rest and to train during the combat with the Moors.

 

 

 

 


 In the Middle ages, Sendim was a municipality as the Pillory proves. Santa Barbara Chapel is large, graceful, and clean.

 

 


 The pilgrimage is on the 13th of February. The butlers used to serve jeropiga (unfermented wine) every year during the festivals. The impressive Santa Maria Mother Church in Sendim is built upon paleo-christian necropolis, whose traces are still visible in the yard. It is possible to see at the same place a milestone from the Coimbra University, the patron of the church since the 16th century. Close to the Church, we can see a peculiar but ruined chapel and farther away, we see Santo Ovídio Chapel.

In Paço square, we find a magnificent 17th century manor house, owned by the family Gouveia Couraças. In Guedieiros it is possible to find the St. Marcos Chapel, surrounded by some crosses, a manor house and several prestigious residences. This village is also well known for its handicraft products, namely church decorators and a wicker makers, who work with straw rolls sewed with osier twig: called the brezas.
