Tavora is a village of ancient settlement, which was celebrated, and only with tragic luck of the Marquees, who had taken its name and later was sacrificed by the Marquees de Pombal at the summit called Alto da Senhora do Calfão. It is a fortified medieval town, placed in a strategic position, which enables it to control not only the course of the river Távora, but also a good part of the involving landscape.

 

 The Castle of Calfão, very difficult to reach, includes the old Hermitage of Nossa Senhora dos Prazeres, although destroyed; it has become an annual pilgrimage pole and a market place.


 

 

 


 In Távora, there are also archaeological vestiges worth visiting, namely the Medieval Necropolis of Passa Fria, consisting of four tombs excavated in the rock. The Mother Church of S. João Baptista, dating back to the seventeenth century holding a modest tower from the beginning of the last century.
